Solemnity of Pentecost
Pentecost is the fiftieth day, the first day after the “week of weeks”. In the Old Testament, that day was the anniversary of the giving of the Law to Moses on Mount Sinai, celebrated (approximately) 50 days after Easter, following the exodus from Egypt. Easter and Pentecost gave spiritual meaning to the rite of sacrificing a lamb practised by nomadic shepherds and that of the first fruits of the harvest offered by settled farmers. At Easter, Jesus, the sacrificed Lamb, redeems his Church and gives his Spirit to his disciples, but it is only 50 days after Easter that the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of the Promise, renews the whole Church. Pentecost closes the Easter season.
